I write game reviews, news, features, and interviews freelance for a videogame magazine. I also do copy edit as a consultant. It's been debated whether or not game journalism is really journalism; we do critique, news, comedy, and special interest. It's hard to call it journalism when we throw jokes into our newspieces--so does that make game writing more like entertainment? We still do a lot of research and fact checking to stay on top of things, so it's hard to call us entertainers when we provide so much coverage. We also do reviews, so we're part critic too. We're a weird bunch, I guess. We don't seem to be hurt by the net by craigslist and ebay, but more by review sites. Though our circulation has been strong despite these, so people must still like having paper in their hands. I'm glad you have such a cool forum.

Hello. My name is Mary and I write movie reviews and run the business office of a small community paper. It's getting a bit scary these days-- the internet is filling the role that newspapers used to serve and sites like craigslist and e-bay are sucking the blood out of that which keeps newspapers alive-- the classified ads. So I'd love to talk about how others in the print journalism field feel we're headed. Are newspapers doomed? Have you started to think about changing careers? Let's talk!
