Foo Fighters is an American rock band formed by musician Dave Grohl in 1995. The group is named after the World War II term "foofighter":a secret force that allegedly researched UFOs. The band has earned a worldwide success, and have scored a number of hit songs, including "This Is a Call,” "Everlong,” "My Hero,” "Learn to Fly", "All My Life", "Times Like These", "Best of You", "DOA", "The Pretender", and "Long Road to Ruin."

Three of their albums have won Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album, and all six have been nominated for Grammys. On top of their six studio albums, they have also contributed to several movie soundtracks, including the song "The One" on the 2002 Orange County soundtrack. Dave Grohl was the drummer of Nirvana. He formed the band after the death of Kurt Cobain. Like Nirvana, Foo Fighters melded loud, heavy guitars with pretty melodies and mixed punk sensibilities with a sharp sense of pop songwriting.

While he was drumming with Nirvana, Dave Grohl was recording original songs at home that never received public release. Those tapes would become the foundation of Foo Fighters. Following Kurt Cobain's suicide in 1994, Grohl recorded the album that became Foo Fighters' debut album in a week. Instead of embarking on a full-fledged solo career, Grohl decided to form a band. The band's self-titled debut, consisting solely of Dave Grohl's solo recordings, was released on July 4, 1995.

It was an instant success in America and by early 1996, the album was certified platinum in the U.S. Throughout 1996, Foo Fighters supported the album with an extensive tour. Late in the year, the group began recording their second album “The Colour and the Shape,” Foo Fighters' second album and the first they recorded as a band, was released in May of 1997. In the next 10 years 4 more albums followed. The last one “Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace,” was released September 25, 2007.
