Niatia Jessica Kirkland (October 4, 1989), better known as Lil Mama, is a MTV Music Award-nominated American rapper currently signed to Jive Records. Raised in both Brooklyn and Harlem, Niatia Kirkland grew up with seven other siblings.
She found solace in writing poetry as well as dance choreography. But with the encouragement of her father, who owns the record label Familiar Faces, she knew that being a hip-hop artist could enhance both of those interests. Lil Mama has been featured on remixes to various singles including "Show Me What You Got" (Jay-Z), "Girlfriend" (Avril Lavigne), "Umbrella" (Rihanna),"Gimme More" (Britney Spears),"Beautiful Girls" (Sean Kingston), and "Just Fine" (Mary J. Blige).
She was also featured in the video for Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls.” Lil Mama was nominated for Monster Single of the Year for her summer smash hit song "Lip Gloss" at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. She also appeared as one of the Judges on the MTV reality dance competition America's Best Dance Crew. Her debut album, “VYP: Voice of the Young People” was released in April 2008, and debuted at #25 in the Billboard.
