Three Days Grace was formed in Norwood, Ontario, Canada, in 1997 by Adam Gontier (vocals, guitar), Brad Walst (bass), and Neil Sanderson (drums). The group was originally called Groundswell, a five-piece that lasted from 1992 until transforming to a trio five years later. Gontier and Walst were raised in Norwood, and many of their songs were inspired by living in a place with a population of around 1,500.

Their first album, “Three Days Grace”, was released in 2003. The album's lead single, "I Hate Everything About You" reached number one on the US Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts and number two on the Canadian Rock charts. Their second single "Just Like You" gave the group a second number-one in the United States and also hit number one on rock charts in Canada.

In 2004, Gavin Brown won a Juno Award for his production work on Three Days Grace and "Try Honesty" by Billy Talent.

In 2005, the lead singer of Three Days Grace, Adam Gontier, was sent into rehab for an addiction to the pain killers. During rehab, Adam had written several songs and once he returned to the band in 2006, they released the album One-X. It includes "Pain", "Animal I Have Become", "Riot", "Never Too Late", "Over and Over" and "Get Out Alive"."Animal I Have Become" became a number one modern rock hit.
